Treasury yields rose as job market data reinforced the view that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this year. Crude fell below $35 a barrel after earlier hitting a two-month high. Government data showed inventories rose by 10.4 million barrels to 518 million in the week to Feb. 26, almost triple the 3.6 million-barrel increase expected by analysts. Asian stocks rose overnight to a two-month high with Japan’s and China’s main indexes both up more than 4 percent.   The European Central Bank will review its stimulus next week against a background of heightened economic risks and weaker-than-expected inflation. ECB President Mario Draghi sent a letter to European lawmakers underlining the bank’s readiness to use all its tools to drive up prices. The Eurozone slid back into deflation in February, driving the ECB further from its inflation target of just below 2%.   Moody’s Investors Service has lowered the outlook on China’s credit rating from stable to negative. Moody’s writes: “Without credible and efficient reforms, China’s GDP growth would slow more markedly as a high debt burden dampens business investment.” Moody’s current …

The Empire State general business conditions index nose-dived to a reading of negative 14.9, from positive 3.9 in July, marking the worst level since April 2009.   The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing market index rose 1 point to 61, marking the highest level since Nov. 2005. Any reading above 50 indicates “good” conditions. NAHB says the report is consistent with their forecast for a gradual strengthening of the single-family housing sector in 2015.   Japan’s economy contracted in Q2 as overseas demand for Japanese goods slumped and households spent less, raising the possibility the government will act to support the country’s weak recovery. GDP shrank 1.6% on an annualized basis in the April-June quarter.   The yuan started the week on stable footing after the People’s Bank of China set the currency’s daily reference rate at 6.39 per dollar – in line with Friday’s close. The move signals Beijing is willing to cede more control to market forces, following last week’s record devaluation that saw the currency plunge 3.6%. Shanghai +0.7%. The Dow lost 600 points from the high a week ago. The Dow lost 2.8% on the week, dropping below its 200 day moving average. The S&P lost 2.1%; Nasdaq down 2.2%. The Russell 3000 was down 3.1% for the week. Amazon gave back about half of yesterday’s gain. Crude oil hit a 4-month low.   And if you are not quite sure what to make of the markets, that is understandable; they aren’t going up and they aren’t going down, we are in a sideways market; this might be the mother of all sideways markets. The Dow is in slightly negative territory year to date. The Dow has moved on either side of breakeven 21 times so far this year. According to research from Bespoke Investment, no other year has been so fickle, the closest being the 20 times the blue chip index swung in both 1934 and 1994.
